SEO & AEO

SEO vs. AEO: What Businesses Need to Know

The 30-second version
  • SEO optimizes your site to rank in search results and earn a click.
  • AEO optimizes your content to be selected, summarized, and cited inside an AI-generated answer — click or no click.
  • Roughly half of Google searches now trigger an AI-written answer before a single blue link appears.
  • Brands cited inside those answers see measurably more organic and paid clicks than brands that aren't.
  • Neither discipline replaces the other. The businesses pulling ahead are structuring content to win both games at once.

01 — The shift

Why Search Stopped Being One Game

For twenty years, "getting found online" meant one thing: rank on the first page and earn the click. That model isn't gone, but it's no longer the only one that matters.

  • Google now generates a written answer, sourced from multiple pages, before most users ever scroll to a traditional result.
  • Microsoft's Copilot Search in Bing was built around the same idea — a synthesized answer with citations attached, not a list of links to sort through.
  • Perplexity skipped the "list of links" model entirely. Citations are the product, not an afterthought bolted onto search results.
  • A growing share of searches now end with zero clicks at all — the user got their answer on the results page and moved on.

That last point is the one most business owners miss. Traffic is still a real goal. But being the source an AI system trusts enough to cite is now a separate, parallel goal — and it requires a different kind of content discipline.

02 — Definitions

What SEO and AEO Actually Mean

SEO — Search Engine Optimization
  • Makes your website easy for search engines to crawl, index, and rank
  • Covers page speed, mobile usability, internal linking, and technical health
  • Goal: appear in results and earn the click
  • Success looks like rankings, traffic, and conversions
AEO — Answer Engine Optimization
  • Makes your content easy for AI systems to read, trust, and quote
  • Covers clear structure, direct answers, schema, and demonstrated authority
  • Goal: get selected as a citation inside a generated answer
  • Success looks like citations, brand mentions, and answer-box visibility
SEO vs. AEO, Side by Side Two disciplines, two scoreboards — same underlying content SEO AEO GOAL Rank on the results page Get cited inside the answer UNIT OF SUCCESS Click-through, then conversion Citation, mention, or quote CONTENT SHAPE Keyword-relevant, link-rich pages Direct answers, lists, defined terms PRIMARY SURFACES Google & Bing organic results AI Overviews, Copilot, Perplexity TIME HORIZON Compounds over months Can shift with a single re-crawl

03 — Why not just pick one

The Business Case for Doing Both

  • SEO without AEO still drives traffic — but the content is invisible to the AI systems an increasing share of buyers now ask first.
  • AEO without SEO can win a citation, but if the underlying site is slow, unindexed, or poorly structured, that citation has nothing solid to point to.
  • The two disciplines share the same raw material: clear writing, real expertise, and a site that's technically sound. Neither is a replacement project — they're the same project, judged by two different graders.
  • Businesses that ignore SEO lose organic reach. Businesses that ignore AEO become invisible in the exact place more of their buyers are now starting: an AI-generated answer.

04 — The data

How Far the Shift Has Already Gone

This isn't a forecast. It's already showing up in the numbers.

  • AI-generated overviews now appear on roughly half of all tracked Google searches — and the rate climbs even higher for research-heavy categories like healthcare and education.
  • The majority of searches worldwide now end without a single click, as users get their answer directly on the results page.
  • Organic click-through rates fall sharply on queries where an AI-written answer appears above the traditional results — though brands that earn a citation inside that answer don't just avoid the loss, they come out ahead of everyone else on the page.
  • Question-style queries — "how," "what," "why," "who" — are the most likely of all to trigger an AI-generated answer, which makes FAQ-style, directly-answering content disproportionately valuable.
Why AEO Can't Wait AI Overview trigger rate by query category 88% Healthcare 83% Education 48% All searches (avg.) 37% Entertainment +35% more organic clicks for brands cited inside an AI-generated answer +91% more paid-search clicks for the same cited brands, versus uncited peers

The AEO Checklist

Run any page through this list. Most of it strengthens SEO at the same time — that overlap is the point.

  • Write page titles and headings that match how people actually phrase questions
  • Answer the core question directly within the first few sentences — don't bury the lede
  • Break content into short, scannable lists, FAQs, and clearly labeled sections
  • Add structured data — Article, FAQPage, HowTo, and Organization schema where relevant
  • Show a visible "last reviewed" date and keep the content genuinely current
  • Back claims with original data, named expertise, or real examples — not generic filler
  • Keep the site technically fast, crawlable, and mobile-friendly — AEO can't fix a broken foundation
  • Build pages around one specific question each, rather than one page trying to answer everything

Quick Answers

What is the difference between SEO and AEO?

SEO makes a website easier for search engines to rank and for people to click into. AEO makes content easy for AI systems to read, trust, and quote directly inside a generated answer — with or without a click.

Does a business need AEO if it already does SEO?

Yes. The two overlap heavily but aren't the same job. A page can rank well and still never get selected as an AI citation. Businesses that want visibility everywhere buyers are searching need to build for both.

How do I optimize content for AI answer engines?

Answer the core question early, structure the page with clear headings and lists, add relevant schema markup, keep the content current, and support claims with real data or named expertise.
